| The Sculpture Park Katzow |
|
currently occupies a 18-hectare meadow and is home to gigantic sculptures. Guests and locals alike value the park as a place where art presents openings into the beautiful, pastoral landsscape ov Vorpommern between Greifswald and Wolgast. Tha sculptures, some comical, jut skywards and offer the observer unusual visual and thematic contrasts to the otherwise peaceful landscape. At the time, the grounds include about 80 sculptures which comprise an important number of modern works by various renowned regional, national and international artists. The Skulpture Park in Katzow was born in 1991 when the sculptor Thomas Radeloff placed his "Three Figures" on the meadow. From here, a viable concept developed in increments. In 1992, tthe 1st International Sculptors Workshop took place. In 1993, the patrons association was founded. In 1994, work began on The Arts Barn, which was dedicated during the final exhibition of Mecklenburg-Vorpommerns Art Summer in autumn 1995. In addition to local support, this ambitious project has found and continues to find great international interest. For quite some time, close contact has been maintained to East European artists. This is documented by exhibitions and working visits by Polish, Estonia and Latvian artists. Thanks to the annual sculptors workshops, the Sculpture Park has achieved broad international recognition. Participating artists have come from Japan, Taiwan, England, Austria, the USA, Hungary, Sweden, Norway, Poland, Latvia, Germany, Kroatia, Bulgaria and the island of Vanuatu. Thus, the Sculpture Park is unique in Germany´s new federal states as the center for the support and promotion of modern sculpture. So each year the number of sculptures grows and with that the opportunities for artistic inspiration, for local recreation and tourism are increasing as well. Every summer there is a sculptors workshop to be helt on the grounds and in the facilities of the Sculpture Park, for each year we invite a maximum of 5 artists from different countries. As of 1997, large atelier rooms and work space are available in the Arts Barn at the Sculpture Park in addition to 4 guest rooms for artists who would like to rent a room and work. |
